3rd graders are working on radial designs with a fall theme. Radial means that the design goes in a circle. Students had to really focus on brush handling skills to paint these detailed works.
A collograph is a print made when objects are added to the printing plate. For Kennedy 3rd graders the added objects were pieces of cut foam, corrugated paper, and other craft items. The video below shows students applying paint to their collograph plate, rubbing to transfer the image to paper, and pulling their print. Even older students are always amazed by the appearance of the final image. Students hand colored their best print to add visual interest and movement. 1st graders are working on a collage like artist/author Eric Carle. They painted large sheets of paper to be cut into leaves, pumpkins, and gourds. Students had to think about size and overlapping when placing items in our collages. Careful detail work with skinny brushes and gold paint was the finishing touch! The following students were honored at the opening of the 2016 Elementary District Art Show last night:
4th Grade Sienna M. Marilyn S. Drew G. Griffin M. Jocelyn M. Reese K. Gavin C. Ellie C. Josie G. Kyan E. 3rd Grade Mariah J. Lydia K. Henry P. Ronan D. Charlie R. Landon S. Baily J. 2nd Grade Olivia L. Logan G. Kate N. Madeline P. 1st Grade Nate A. Alex L. Saywa M. Kayana R. Twenty-five students from each of the elementary building were selected due to the skill and effort shown in their work. The show was inspired by art from Ancient Egypt and will be on view through the rest of October during normal hours at the Pleasant Hill Library. Congratulations to Kennedy's chosen artists on being in their first art show! Third grade looked at the cubist works of Pablo Picasso. His goal was to make a new kind of art by showing many sides of one object at a time. We practiced drawing the parts of a face from different perspectives and blending with crayons. Here is a small sample of our Egyptian hallway display. Fourth graders made metal relief tomb treasures and third grade made a section of tomb wall containing hieroglyphics. The sarcophagus has the cartouche, or signature, of a Kennedy staff member. Have you figured it out yet? Kindergarten artists are learning about line. We read The Straight Line Wonder by Mem Fox to learn about all the ways a line can move: straight, wavy, zig-zag, and loopy. Our youngest artists love painting in our first weeks of art! Second, third, and fourth grade have been looking at art from Ancient Egypt. There is no way I could possibly cover all the information about this complex and interesting civilization. I did find some online activities for students who want to learn more! Brave the Tomb of the Unknown Mummyand use clues to discover whose tomb you are in here. (National Geographic) Learn more about royal servant Perneb and tour his burial site here. (Met Museum) Take a tour of the treasures of King Tut's tomb in the Cairo Museum of Egyptian Antiquities in the video below. Tomorrow is Kennedy Elementary's Open House. I am looking forward to seeing new and familiar faces, seeing who grew a foot in three months, cut off a bunch of their hair, or took a fun trip.
The art room is momentarily very clean... I'm also looking forward to messing it up in the best way possible with about five hundred other artists. I'm hoping you "can't wait" either! |
