In the spaces between the stencil prints we added a running stitch. A running stitch looks like a dotted line and goes in a pattern. Students learned to thread a needle and that the hole in the needle is called an eye. It took lots of concentration to complete at least eight lines of running stitch. Most students chose to make their stitching lines in a color pattern.
We talked about how our paper weaving in first grade prepared us to use a needle and thread; and how learning a running stitch will help us be ready for more difficult textile projects in third and fourth grade.
